West Pontiac Connect (Community Access Centre )
WPC is a non-profit organization. Since 2003, WPC has sponsored and provided 12 Skills Link programs, assisting young people who are facing multiple barriers to finding employment (or returning to school) due to lack of education, single parenting responsibilities, job skills, motivation, self-esteem, or life skills. This program has been a life-changer for many local youth and has brought in over $1,200,000 in grants into our Upper Pontiac communities, since 2003.
In addition to the Skills Link programs, WPC operated its first seniors program in 2013, offering a series of presentations on senior abuse awareness, financial abuse and fraud awareness, legal issues and Federal programs and services available for seniors. In addition, this project provided a series of one-on-one computer literacy and Internet training sessions for seniors. We have applied for a grant to offer another seniors program in 2015, through the federal New Horizons for Seniors program.
Year round, WPC provides (and plans to enhance later this year) a number of services including internet access, faxing, photocopying, design and printing services. We will be exploring a range of other offerings, of value to local businesses and non-profit organizations, in the fall.

Support the family-senior committee
The municipality is responsible for supporting the needs of this committee in cooperation with the MRC, and the members will continue to represent the community (e.g. seniors, youth and parents).
- The municipality will provide a meeting location, secretarial support, mileage and babysitting fees for 2-3 meetings a year
- The municipality will assign a councillor or Director-General to coordinate the biannual meetings.
- Committee coordinator or members will attend coordination meetings with The MRC and other Person (Councillor) Representing Family and Senior’s Issues (PRFaSI).
- The municipality and committee will encourage promotion of our Family-Senior Friendly municipality by local businesses and organizations, e.g. signage, banners, placemats.
Family & senior friendly economic development
The municipality will promote and develop local business that is family and senior friendly.
Actions :
- Development of main street including handicap access.
- Attract businesses, beautify the town, and install sidewalks.
- Sponsor Community Clean up Day-free garbage bags, pickup along the roads.
- Support the development of green business.
- Improve zoning for business without negatively impacting citizen’s quality of life.
- Support job creation for youth and adults.
- Promote youth employment to local businesses.
- Student summer employment with the municipality.
- Promote everything; publicity that is wide reaching.
- Communicate with businesses to promote handicap access and family/senior friendly businesses.
- Support the establishment of a farmer’s market.
- Maintain our quiet way of life.
Family-senior municipal policy
Vision
L’Isle-aux-Allumettes is a community in a natural setting where:
- Citizens of all ages live in harmony;
- We feel safe, respected, valued;
- And our community has all the services and activities required to live a happy, healthy and active family life from birth through the senior years.
Objectives
The Municipality of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes aims to “Think and Act Family-Senior Friendly” by:
- Celebrating, embracing and maintaining our small town approach to rural living, while enjoying the nearby amenities of larger neighbouring centres;
- Preserving, promoting and enhancing the quality of life for our families and seniors;
- Encouraging lifelong residency; and
- Promoting the sustainable social and economic development of the municipality while maintaining our quiet and peaceful environment.
Evaluation
The Family Senior Municipal Policy Committee will continue its work for the duration of the three year action plan (2012-2015) to fulfill its primary responsibility of evaluating the action plan. The committee may also provide consultation to the municipality and council on matters related to families and seniors. Lead by the municipality, the committee will meet a minimum of twice per year.

Definition of Family
The family is the fundamental social institution which gathers individuals bound by birth or by choice within a household or within a domestic unit. This definition also includes the people living alone, who can have family bonds without necessarily living under the same roof.
